Student Council Overview

A school or district may form a student council for various reasons. Generally, the purpose of the student council is to train youth in leadership skills. Strong leadership skills develop in students when they are given the ability to communicate their ideas and opinions to those in power. The student council helps the school board decide which activities and projects are most beneficial to students, the school, and the community.

The student council is a group of elected and volunteer students who, within the framework of a constitution or bylaws, work with an adult advisor to provide a means for student expression and support in school affairs and activities, provide opportunities for student experience in leadership, and encourage (student/faculty/community relations).

Through projects and activities, student councils work to:

  • Promote citizenship
  • Promote scholarship
  • Promote leadership
  • Promote human relations
  • Promote cultural values

The student council is a group of student leaders who work with an adult advisor to collaborate with others to influence their school community, which impacts their town or city, which influences our state, which affects our country, and ultimately changes the world.
